Six Questions with Maggi Myers

Today's Six Question guest is Maggi Myers, author of The Final Piece. She's also a veteran of the Twilight fandom that I was a member of what seems like a lifetime ago.

Welcome to Six Questions Maggi!

Was there a certain book or author that inspired you to write?

I had the idea for The Final Piece for 8 years before I found the courage to write it. I read The Opportunist by Tarryn Fisher in May of 2012 and was blown away. Reading it shook me out of my cowardice and got me writing. I'm eternally indebted to Tarryn and her gorgeous book.

Do you plan out your novel or just fly by the seat of your pants?

I like to have a balance of both. I want to know where my book is going but not so much that it restricts the characters from revealing things I may have not known about them. For instance, the first outline of The Final Piece had a completely different ending. Beth and Ryan's relationship evolved in a totally different way. I always knew they would end up together and Beth would get her happily ever after, I just wasn't sure how they would end up in that place.

How do you edit?

I don't. I worship the ground my editor walks on. I'm a storyteller, not a grammar whiz. No one should get edited by me!

Did you build a platform before releasing The Final Piece?

I was so nervous about releasing The Final Piece, I didn't build much of a platform. I didn't send out ARCs and very little at the beginning. I wish that I had been more organized and less "fly by the seat of my pants" about it.
How have you found the right readers for you?

I don't know how I got so lucky, but I have been blessed with a passionate audience who've embraced my book. It's a wild to see the book through their eyes. I love it!

If you could start all over, what would you do differently?

If I could go back, I would tell myself to have more confidence. Other than that, if I changed anything, I wouldn't be where I am. I really love where I am.

One question I always love asking is who inspired you to write. So, tell me readers -- who inspired you to write?

  1. What a fun interview! Who inspires me? Barbara Kingsolver, Amy Tan, Stephen King, Jennifer Weiner, Anne Tyler and so many more.
